Reynolds and Sawvell place at national meet
Members of the CSC track and field team, Dan “Shug” Reynolds, junior of Granby, Colorado, and Kyla Sawvell, senior of Wall, South Dakota, finished off the indoor season by placing at the NCAA Division II Indoor Championships on Friday and Saturday in Virginia Beach, Virginia.
The pair rounded off an outstanding indoor season of competition, claiming their spots as two of the best throwers in the country.
Reynolds, coming off of an undefeated weight throw season, took fifth in the event with a throw of 20.45 meters, just .06 meters off of his personal best.
Unlike Sawvell, Reynolds was unable to qualify for the shot put, however still had a moderately successful season in the event claiming first place at a handful of meets this season.
The junior thrower will look to improve in the shot put for the upcoming outdoor season beginning later this month in Spearfish, South Dakota as the Black Hills State University Invite.
As for weight throw, Reynolds will once again be chasing a national title going into his senior season in the spring of 2024
Sawvell, also coming off of an undefeated weight throw season, took fifth in the event with a throw of 19.88 meters. More impressively, she took third in the shot put with a throw of 15.34 meters, just .15 meters off of her personal best.
Both national placers’ performances were good enough to earn them a position on the NCAA Division II All-American team.
Eight CSC athletes made the all-RMAC team as well. Reynolds and Sawvell were appropriately among them taking spots on the all-RMAC first team.
Sprinter Osvaldo Cano, junior of Oshkosh, and jumper Jourdaine Cerenil, sophomore of Pine Bluffs, Wyoming, made first team as well.

Cerenil led all CSC jumpers, both men and women, in terms of placement. She won the high jump at every regular season meet she competed at.
She took third in the event at the RMAC championships, with a season best height of 1.69 meters, narrowly missing the national meet by .02 meters.
