A sand volleyball tournament is scheduled for 5 p.m. today at the courts behind High Rise.

Participants will be asked to assemble four-person teams to compete in a single elimination tournament, with prizes will be awarded to the winning team.

The CSC public relations program joined with Friends of Pets, a local animal shelter, to host the event.

Donations will be accepted, including donations of pet food and supplies. Donors will be entered in a raffle for a chance to win additional prizes.

Public relations students Brittney Deadmond, sophomore of Rapid City, S.D., Carmen Brown, junior of Banner County, and Desiree Young, senior of Greybull, Wyo., came up with the tournament to help promote the public relations program as part of a group project for a class.

“We wanted to incorporate a non-profit organization into the event to help by receiving donations,” Deadmond said.

Information about the public relations program will be available at the event. The public relations program is offered as part of the communications and social science department.

Chadron State College and 1,416 high school students from 52 high schools in three states will be celebrating the 50th anniversary of The CSC Scholastic Contest on Friday.

In addition to the 46 exams that will be given across campus from 8:30 a.m. – 12:30 p.m., there will be contests and displays to occupy the students before, after, and between tests.

Not all events require a pencil and paper.

Family and consumer science professor Jay Sutliffe will administer the “Eagle Cook-Off” competition. The team event consists of three members preparing a healthy meal that you might expect a typical college student to eat. The teams have twenty minutes and a limited number of appliances to prepare a food that meets certain dietary requirements of fiber content and fat content at a low cost per serving.

The Chadron State College Scholastic Day is divided into five categories and schools compete for points in each division. The school that receives the most points in each area will receive a plaque.

The top three individuals in each test are awarded medals and seniors who place first in a test receive the Scholastic Achievement Award, which covers the in-state portion of tuition for CSC’s 2010-2011 academic year.

Students from the Lifespan Wellness class are planning to host “One Day without Shoes” 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. April 8 in the Student Center.

The event’s Web site states the goal of “One Day Without Shoes” is to increase awareness of the risks to people in developing countries who do not have adequate access to shoes.

TOMS Shoes is the world-wide coordinator of “One Day Without Shoes.” The TOMS Shoes Web Site states “wearing shoes and practicing basic hygiene can prevent both infection and disease due to unsafe roads and contaminated soil.
“By imagining a life barefoot, we can all contribute to the awareness of these conditions.”

Katie Zacharias, sophomore of Chadron, said things will move outside to the clock tower at approximately 11 a.m. for a shoe kick-off contest and foot painting.

The event will conclude with an unshod mini-walk around campus.

The CSC Cheer Team will have tryouts noon – 3:00 p.m. April 17 at the Nelson Physical Activity Center in the upper level dance room. The dress code for tryouts are black athletic shorts, a T-shirt, and white tennis shoes.

Nearly 200 students will be performing at a concert from 7:30 – 9:30 p.m. tonight in the Memorial Hall Auditorium.

The Chadron State College Wind Symphony, Chadron Middle School and the Chadron High School will each be performing three pieces individually with a musical piece performed by everyone together as a finale.

The Chadron State College Chess Open will be Saturday in the Mari Sandoz Center. The tournament will open at 10 a.m. with the first round of matches beginning at 10:30 a.m.

The entry fee is $8 and participants are asked to bring a chessboard with pieces and a chess clock.

Each participant will play four matches, the first three limited to 90 minutes and the fourth to two hours.

The participants will play someone closer to their own ability in each successive round.
