CSCEA awards three $500 scholarships

The Chadron State College Education Association has awarded its scholarships for this year, with each one going to a student in one of Chadron State’s three schools.

Victoria Barraza, senior of Bayard, received the scholarship for the School of Business, Applied and Mathematical Sciences, and Sciences.

Mark Wolleson, graduate student of Chadron, received the scholarship for the School of Education, Human Performance, Counseling, Psychology, and Social Work.

Daniel Schwager, senior of Bartlett, received the final scholarship, which was for the School of Liberal Arts.

Role-players to explore poverty

As part of the 21st Annual Excellence in Early Childhood Conference at Chadron State this year, a role-playing exercise will illustrate the lifestyle of the poor.

Participants will take on the role of families facing poverty due to a range of circumstances, from unemployment to homelessness.

They will interact with volunteers playing social workers, pawnbrokers, law enforcement, and teachers, among others. The simulation is scheduled for 2 to 5 p.m. Feb. 19.

NE Arts Council awards theater grant

The Post Playhouse, which is associated with the Chadron State Theater Department, received a $360 grant from the Nebraska Arts Council. The money will be used to support the Post Playhouse’s program for the Memorial Day weekend. The Nebraska Arts Council is funded by the Nebraska Legislature, the National Endowment for the Arts, and the National Cultural Endowment.

Blood drive aims to drain campus

Students and area residents who wish to give the gift of blood this Valentine’s Day will have an opportunity Feb. 11. West Nebraska Blood Center will be in the Student Center from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. Appointments can be made by calling 303-931-8976, though walk-ins are welcome. The drive is being sponsored by Cardinal Key. Cardinal Key officer and CSC senior Ashley Nutsch said there will be free cookies.

Area foundation to grant scholarships

The Darold A. Newblom Foundation is accepting applications for its eighteenth year of scholarships and grants. The application deadline is March 31. Funds will be awarded in May. The foundation seeks to support young men and women pursuing their education in Dawes and Box Butte counties. It also provides money to educational associations and institutions. Those who fit the Newblom Foundation’s guidelines can get an application by calling the foundation’s Secretary-Treasurer, Wally A. Seiler, at 308-762-4693.
