Women’s wresting finds first dual wins

By Whitley Reder

The CSC women’s wrestling team boosted their record to 3-1 after three consecutive dual victories in Minot, South Dakota.

After struggling in weeks prior against the third-ranked Mavericks of Colorado Mesa, the Eagles won three duals in a row on Nov. 18 and 19.

The Eagles’ first dual against the Minot State Beavers went well. The Beavers’ lone victory came at 123 lbs, when Jazmin Gorder, freshman of Poplar, Montana pinned CSC’s Kacey Schafer, freshman of Orange, California.

Sofia Rubio, junior of Tempe, Arizona, at 191 lbs, Lila Bloomer, freshman of Callaway, at 170 lbs, and Ryleigh Dye, sophomore of Queen Creek, Arizona, at 136 lbs, all won by pinning their opponents, extending the Eagles’ lead even further.

The stout Eagle unit performed well throughout, beating Minot State 42-5.

The following Saturday, the Eagles were matched up against a couple of ranked opponents, the NAIA 14th-ranked University of Jamestown and the second-ranked Canadian University of Saskatchewan.

Despite the tough competition, the Eagles picked up another two wins, extending their dual win streak to three.

The Eagles’ dual against Jamestown did not bring much struggle. CSC’s Britley Lopez, freshman of Borger, Texas, at 101 lbs, kicked off the dual with a pin against Jamestown’s Alexis Lafountain, freshman of Watertown, New York.

From there, the Eagles ran away with it with multiple pins and technical fall victories, beating the Jimmies 30-17.

However, the Eagles’ dual against Saskatchewan was far closer. CSC won by forfeit at 101, 109, and 116 lbs, which made the difference against the Huskies. The Eagles narrowly won 25-23, beating the Canadian second-ranked team.

The Eagles will compete again when they travel to Crete to compete in the Doane Open on Dec. 3.
