Flames from both the West Ash and Douthit Fires are within 25 miles of Chadron, as of 10:30 p.m. Wednesday evening, according to multiple eye-witness reports.

Scattered fires rage 40 miles from campus
The smoke that filled the air yesterday and shrouded the Chadron skyline in haze came from several fires burning in Dawes and Box Butte Counties that consumed more than 1,200 acres, officials state.
