Follow the Labor party line: vote!

Sara Labor

In the excitement of Halloween, many are forgetting another important day that is quickly approaching: election day on Tuesday.

While asking around, I was surprised at the amount of people who don’t even know about it. The most common response was, “There’s voting this year? For president?”

This years election is not, in fact, for president. This mid-term election is for house and senate representatives, as well as local elections for mayors, sheriffs, etc.

College students are sadly uninformed about elections. If you are over eighteen, one of your priorities should be to become involved.

Figure out who is running in your state and vote!

Voting is actually a very simple process. If you are from another state, like myself, get an absentee ballot. It‘s easy. You can download them online, and send in a photocopy of your ID with the ballot. Simple! If you’re from Chadron, you can just vote here!

In fact, it’s possible to just drive down the street, vote, and be done. It might take fifteen minutes. Easy!
In the mid-term elections of 2006, a mere 25.5 percent of people ages 18-25 voted. In 2008, the year of the presidential election, this number went up to 48.5 according to civicyouth.org.

Unfortunately, it seems that many people, and not just students, find the presidential elections much more significant than the mid-term elections, but this election is just as important.

Maybe you say “it doesn’t matter, I’m just one person out of millions.”

Could you imagine what would happen if everyone said that? Then no one votes, and then what’s the point of the Democratic system?

Our country was founded on the idea “by the people, for the people.” We make up the rules in our country, and that is the whole idea of America, isn’t it?

So go out, do your American duty, and vote Nov. 2.
