Long runners fair well in Lincoln

Out of 18 schools, the CSC Cross Country women’s and men’s teams snagged fifth and eighth at the Woody Greeno Invite, Saturday in Lincoln.

The women, ranked ninth in the South Central Region Division II Women’s Cross Country rankings as of Sept. 18, placed fifth with an overall score of 157 points and a total time of 2:00:41.

Jayme Nunes, 20, sophomore of Alliance, finished fourth in a field of 185.

The men finished eighth with an overall score of 218 points and a total time of 2:18:57.

Evans Koech, sophomore of Nairobi, Kenya, was the first of Chadron State’s men to cross the finish line. He posted a time of 27:05:16 and placed 28th in a field of 225.

Head Coach Ryan Baily expressed his thoughts about his team’s performance.

“This is a big improvement from last year,” Baily said. “There is a lot of room to grow.”

He said the runners now know what they need to work on and added that the number of competitors can have an effect on how the runners perform.

He also said that although several members were sick, the team still performed well. He said he would like to see the runners give even more effort and keep doing well.

Assistant Track and Field Coach Brian Medigovich said there is always room for improvement, but they placed higher Saturday than they have ever placed before.

“They gave it their all,” he said. “And as a team they finished hard and well.”
