Senate allocates $16k for leadership conference, CAB coordinates campus clean-up

Senate allocated $16,000 from the Student Activity Fee by unanimous vote Monday.

The money will be used to send the six member executive board, student trustee, and an adviser to the National Center for Student Leadership Conference, Nov. 21-24, in New Orleans, La.

The decision to attend the NCSL conference stems from month-long discussions between the executive board and the senate advisers.

The allocation was introduced during Monday’s meeting, and it was approved in the same session after a lengthy open discussion.

Jacob Rissler, student association president, stated that attending this conference will make them nationally certified student leaders and will keep the leaders up to standards.

Chief Justice Jon Lordino emphasized that the board, as well as the adviser, are going to the conference for the leadership training, and will not be going for sight-seeing.

“We have taken some heat previously and we are not doing this just to take a trip.” Rissler added.

Josh Keating, senator of liberal arts, suggested having an open seminar to present the information to students and said it will avoid conflict and getting “reamed by The Eagle.”

Rissler said that the executive board had already planned to host a seminar  for interested students once the board returns from the NCSL conference.  The goal of the seminar will be for the Executive Board to share what they will have learned at the conference.

The Campus Activity Board announced Tuesday that they are organizing a campus clean-up scheduled today, from 2-4 p.m.  Interested students should meet by the clock tower before 2, Dani Buckley, CAB vice chair of programming, said.

Lane Swedberg, CAB chair, apologized for the cancelled events during Homecoming, but said it was a success despite the weather.

Laurie Sinn, director for student activities, said that unopened float supplies will be returned to Walmart after the break.

Suggestions for next year’s homecoming can be taken to the homecoming committee, Swedberg said.

CAB plans to discuss a $230 allocation during its next meeting on Oct. 22.

The allocation will  cover the registration fee for a flag-football tournament Nov. 8-10.

The team that wins the tournament will go on to compete in a national tournament.
