Last month the legislature, in order to balance the books, decided to cut social services such as Medicaid and food stamp programs for legal immigrants. The state should consider this life lesson: It’s more noble to take on those who are rich and strong to make ends meet than to pick on those who are honest, small workers.

The Eagle staff is pleased to see students and faculty back on campus and ready to start the Fall semester.

Another academic year is coming to a close. Next week everyone will take their finals and then they will be home free.

Every year, the Residence Life Association puts on many programs and events. Some are fun and educational, and they are always a good way to get out of the dorm room.

Time to get ready for warm days, extra money for summer work, swimming, late nights, and — except for summer classes — no homework! But with all of this anticipation there comes the risk of slacking off until the last minute.

On Tuesday, students across campus and people all over the world participated in One Day Without Shoes, an international event sponsored by TOM shoes to help raise awareness of people in Africa who are unable to afford shoes.

Many people may have been watching or listening to coverage about the battle between the Wisconsin state government and public sector unions.

Some people may think “Why should I vote in the Student Senate elections?” This is unfortunate. These elections are not only good experience for actual voting, but also a good way to get more involved in college.

With all of the death and destruction, coupled with wide-spread fears about the impact not only on the Japanese economy, but the global market as well, it would seem easy to abandon hope and dwell on the bitter social and economic problems created by the crisis.

This week, when the Internet failed, classes had to be canceled, and students went through Facebook withdrawals. How many of these students went for a walk in this beautiful weather or grabbed a novel off of their shelves?
