Eagles rip through the ThunderWolves
With two pins and a technical fall, the Eagles soared for another conference win against Colorado State University-Pueblo, 26-14.
Against Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference teams, Chadron State has gone 4-0.
“I was happy to see that the team went out there and competed and gave everything that they had and left it all out there,” Kobe Lepe, redshirt sophomore of San Fernando, California, said. “Training hasn’t been the easiest but it’s a good sight to see that we’re all powering through and still managing to come out on top.”
The afternoon started off with one of the pins. Darwin Hull, freshman of Schertz, Texas, maneuvered his opponent Remington Winmill, freshman of Wendell, Idaho, to his back, ending the 174-pound bout under a minute and a half.
Rowdy Pfeil, sophomore of Moorcroft, Wyoming, followed with a technical fall win, 16-1, to put the Eagles above the ThunderWolves by 11 points.
During the 133-pound match, Kobe Lepe, redshirt sophomore of San Fernando, California, pinned ThunderWolf Devin Lueck, redshirt sophomore of Fountain, Colorado, with nine seconds left of the first period.
“Earning the pin Saturday felt great especially with having the atmosphere in Chicoine but also it felt great just to keep the momentum going for the team and the matches after me,” Lepe said.
No. 10 Mason Watt, redshirt junior of Broomfield, Colorado; Quade Smith, freshman of Layton, Utah; and Ethan Leake, redshirt sophomore of Clovis, California, all took decision wins over their opponents.
Despite being behind by a point at the end of the second period, Watt persisted through the last period against No. 15 Gavin Nye, redshirt junior of Gerber, California, earning an escape and a takedown, and finishing with an extra point for ride time to take the win, 6-3.
Smith took his match after earning four back points in the third period, 5-3, and Leake tallied up five of his seven points in the second period with an escape, a takedown, and a two-point near fall.
The match ended with a close 165-weight bout with Javen Palmer, redshirt junior of Casper, Wyoming, wrestling for the Eagle. Despite holding on to the lead, Palmer was taken down near the end of his match and fell behind his opponent, 5-4.
CSC men’s wrestling team is currently scheduled for a busy weekend with the Morningside College Open in Sioux City, Iowa, at 8 a.m., Saturday, followed by a home dual against Colorado School of Mines at 1 p.m., Sunday.
“Some of the things that I’ve enjoyed this season is just how close we’ve all come together as a family and are always looking out for each other and having one another’s back,” Lepe said.
