Eagles get ran down on the road
Chadron State women’s basketball team continues to struggle away from home and takes another loss to Metropolitan State University of Denver, 81-61.
The Eagles hold a 6-12 overall record, losing 11 of their games while on the road.
“Overall, as a team we struggled with ball movement and against MSU it was a main reason we fell short,” Olyvia Pacheco, sophomore of Rawlins, Wyoming, said. “When we focus on it and execute on the offensive end, games are a lot closer for us.”
Near the end of the third quarter, Olyvia Pacheco, sophomore of Rawlins, Wyoming, contributed five points with three free throws and a layup, helping the Eagles to momentarily bring the point margin to less than 20.
Despite CSC outscoring MSU-Denver in the third quarter, 23-20, the Eagles were still going into the fourth quarter behind by 18 points.
Tatum Peterson, senior of Glenwood Springs, Colorado, started the final quarter off with a jumper, but the Eagles were unable to catch up by the end.
Jori Peters, senior of Mitchell, was able to cut down the point-margin to 20 with a three-pointer to finish out the game for the Eagles.
“I’ve enjoyed how competitive and supportive this team is each game and practice,” Pacheco said. “Everyone knows how much depth we have in the team and is willing to celebrate each other’s success.”
Peters led the night for Chadron State with 16 points, being six of nine for field goals, one of three for three pointers and three of four for free throws.
Peterson and Pacheco both contributed 12 points each with Ashayla Powers, redshirt freshman of Longmont, Colorado, close behind with 10.
The roadrunners outpaced the Eagles by scoring 20 points each quarter and keeping CSC to only seven points in the second quarter.
Despite being 69% from the free-throw line, the Eagles saw struggles with the rest of their shots being 38% for field goals and 27.3% for three pointers, while MSU-Denver were 45.9% for field goals, 33.3% for three pointers and 83.3% for free throws.
Chadron State women’s basketball team plays in the Chicoine Center against Colorado State University-Pueblo Friday and against Adams State University Saturday, both scheduled for 5:30 p.m.
“This week we have to focus on valuing the ball and taking shots that are good for us because we have winnable games this week,” Pacheco said. “We have a great opportunity to make teams respect us on our home court.”
