Two meet records set by CSC athletes
Two meet records were set by Chadron State athletes, along with 12 first place Eagle finisher during the Don Holst Open Saturday in the Nelson Physical Activity Center.
Jourdaine Cerenil, sophomore of Pine Bluffs, Wyoming, soared to a meet record height of 5 feet, 6.5 inches (1.69 meters) in the high jump. Her mark was half an inch higher than the old record set by CSC Jasmyn Webster in 2012.
With Saturday’s marks, Cerenil currently ranks No. 14 in National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) Division II and an NCAA provisional qualifier.
“Considering had just gotten out of quarantine and had been having an off week at practice, I was a little frustrated,” Cerenil said. “However, putting together the mark I did this last Saturday felt reliving considering I am now way ahead of where I was last year and becoming more consistent too.”
The other record was set by CSC men’s 4×400 meter relay—consisting of brothers Osiel Cano and Osvaldo Cano, both sophomores of Oshkosh; Morgan Fawver, junior of McCook; and Greg Logsdon, sophomore of Torrington, Wyoming—with a time of 3:19.99. The four placed themselves fifth on CSC’s all-time list and surpassed last years’ time of 3:22.4.
Eagles made high marks in the field events, completely sweeping the top places in the women’s and men’s high jump, men’s triple jump, and men’s shot put.
Behind Cerenil in the high jump was Miranda Gilkey, senior of Lusk, Wyoming, at second who marked 5 feet, 5.25 inches (1.66 meters).
Hannah Christie, sophomore of Alpine, Wyoming, who finished third, and Hunter Wiebelhaus, freshman of Springview, who finished fourth, both saw personal bests in the high jump at 5 feet, 3.5 inches (1.61 meters).
In the triple jump, Derrick Nwagwu, junior of Aurora, Colorado, put together another place-worthy mark with a leap of 49 feet, 3.5 inches (15.02 meters) to take the gold.
Brock Voth, senior of Berthoud, Colorado, finished second with a jump of 47 feet, 7 inches, (14.5 meters) and Joss Linse, senior of Plattsmouth, finished third at 45 feet, 7.75 inches (13.91 meters).
For the men’s high jump, Joe Dumsa, senior of Sandy, Utah, cleared the bar at 6 feet, 9.5 inches (2.07 meters) to soar into first.
Cerenil said she was happy to see Dumsa jumped as well as he did.
“I remember talking about our goals for the meet like usual and I could just tell from how hyped we were, before even competing, that it was going to be an awesome day,” she said.
Both Nwagwu and Dumsa are currently ranked in the top 15 of their events and provisionally qualified for the NCAA Division II National Indoor Meet.
Hector Ortega, redshirt freshman of Northglenn, Colorado, was runner-up in the high jump at 6 feet, 5 inches (1.96 meters).
Throwing things into gear, Shane Collins, junior of Bison, South Dakota, led the men’s shot put, finishing first with a throw of 48 feet, 6.25 inches (14.79 meters).
Eagles also took the three places behind Collins. Parker Gonser, sophomore of Windsor, Colorado, who finished second, threw 46 feet, 11.5 inches (14.31 meters).
Dan Reynolds, sophomore of Granby, Colorado, finished third with a throw of 46 feet, 0.5 inches (14.03 meters), and Reid Spady, sophomore of Oshkosh, took fourth at 45 feet, 10 inches (13.97 meters).
Reynolds took first in the weight throw at 59 feet, 4 inches (18.08 meters) with Collins taking second at 55 feet, 3.75 inches (16.86 meters).
As for the races, Carlie Collier, junior of Dunning, took first in both the 60 meters timed at 7.9 seconds and the 200 meters timed at 26.18 seconds.
CSC athletes that also took first in events were Morgan Fawver, junior of McCook, in the 60 meters at 6.84 seconds; Quincy Efeturi, freshman of Ikorodu, Nigeria, in the 200 meters at 22.7 seconds; and Julianne Thomsen, senior of Custer, South Dakota, in the 60-meter hurdles at 9.48 seconds.
CSC athletes travel for the Mines Winter Classic hosted by Colorado School of Mines, Friday and Saturday at Golden.
