By Kennie Gable – Reporter

The CSC women’s basketball played its best weekend of the season so far after defeating the South Dakota Mines Hardrockers, of Rapid City, on Saturday, and narrowly losing to the Colorado Christian Cougars, of Lakewood, on Tuesday.

On Saturday, the Eagles traveled to Rapid City, South Dakota, to take on South Dakota Mines.

Going into the match-up, the Eagles were on a three-game losing streak and were 0-7 on the road.

The Eagles started the game slow with their field goal percentage sitting at just .272 at the end of the first quarter. The team was also sitting with a zero in 3-points made at the end of the first quarter.

The Eagles’ shots, however, began to fall at the start of the third quarter with their field goal percentage at .533, 3-point percentage at .400, and free throw percentage at .800.

Samiyah Worrell, senior of Fountain, Colorado, led the Eagles with 14 points and four steals overall.

Not far behind Worrell, was Ashayla Powers, sophomore of Longmont, Colorado. She had 11 points on the game along with eight rebounds and a steal.

In the end, the Eagles took home the win over Mines with a 67-60 score.

Coming off that huge road win, the Eagles found themselves in a heartbreak at the Chicoine Center, Tuesday against the Colorado Christian Cougars.

The team once again started slow in the first quarter, going two of 11 for field goal shots and zero for three in 3-pointer attempts.

However, the slow start quickly got going in the second quarter with the team going eight of 11 in field goal attempts.

The Eagles were led by Kyra Tanabe, redshirt freshman from Hawai’i Kai, Hawaii. She had 24 points on the game along with four rebounds.

Close behind her again was Powers. She had 17 points, two steals, and six rebounds.

The Eagles fought hard against the Cougars leading in the last 90 seconds. The women found themselves back and forth between the last three possessions with the Rockers.

In the last four seconds, the Eagles and Cougars were all tied up at 71. It was all up to Cougar Maggie Phipps to sink a deep 3-pointer with four seconds left on the board to end the game. Phipps drained the final shot, winning the game for CCU.

The Eagles’ short winning streak came quickly to an end and left Chadron State 4-17 on the season.

Despite this, the victory over the South Dakota Mines Hardrockers allowed the Eagles to climb out of last place in the RMAC, placing them 14th.

The Eagles will take the court today against the Western Colorado Mountaineers, of Gunnison, at 5:30 p.m., in the Chicoine Center.
